ReSynth

ReSynth is a cross-platform native pseudo-realtime synthesizer tool for Renoise.

Version 2 implements vastly expanded functionality and supports real-time playing and modification.

ReSynth2 contains the following features:

  • Four oscillators
  • Each oscillator selectable between virtual-analog or wavetable
  • Each oscillator has a 'calm' or 'harsh' mode which emulates oscillator smoothing
  • Each oscillator has independent transpose (-24 to +24 semitones)
  • Each oscillator has independent fine tuning (-63 to +63 cents)
  • Each oscillator has independent volume (off, -36 to +3 dB)
  • Each oscillator has independent panning (hard left to hard right)
  • The ReSynth2 GUI contains its own 'status bar' which reports on the latest user modification
  • All virtual-analog oscillator settings can be randomized ('Randomize Oscillators' button)
  • All tuning and mixer parameters can be randomized ('Randomize Tuning/Mixer' button)
  • Global instrument reset to start-up defaults ('Reset' button)

Each virtual-analog oscillator contains the following features:

  • Four selectable base waveforms:
    • Sine/Tri
    • Pulse
    • Sawtooth
    • Noise
  • Wave modification function ('Mod' control):
    • For 'Sine/Tri' waveform this will morph between a pure sine and triangle waveform
    • For 'Pulse' waveform this will set the pulse wave duty
  • Wave modification function LFO:
    • Sinusoidal LFO
    • Variable LFO depth ('LFO' control)
    • Variable LFO rate from 2 to 256 wave cycles ('Rate' control)

Each wavetable oscillator contains the following features:

  • User supplied waveforms
  • Organized into wavebanks (folders)
  • Quick and easy waveform selection

ReSynth2 supports real-time modification while playing:

  • Ensure the ReSynth window is open for the desired instrument
  • Playing live while modifying the ReSynth controls will not stop any currently played notes (i.e. ReSynth2 is suitable for live performance playing). This is with the exception of the two 'randomize' buttons, the 'reset' button, changing oscillator type ('analog' or 'wavetable' and loaded a new wavetable waveform.

User interface improvements:

  • Keyboard pass-through (the computer keyboard will continue to play notes while the ReSynth2 window has focus)
  • Vastly simplified patch management:
    • Users can treat ReSynth2 instruments as normal XRNI Renoise instruments
    • If the user does not have the ReSynth tool installed they will still be able to play the instrument
    • If the user has the ReSynth tool installed then they can quickly and simply continue editing the instrument from the current parameters
  • All controls except wavetable oscillator wavebank and waveform selection are MIDI mappable (these are excluded as a MIDI controller may not have the necessary resolution to access all entries)
  • 'New ReSynth Instrument' and 'Open as ReSynth Instrument' menu entries in both the Main Menu 'Tools' menu and the Instrument Box context menu
  • An additional Main Menu 'Tools' menu entry to open the wavetable waveforms folder with a file browser (Windows Explorer, Mac OS Finder etc.) to enable the user to populate the wavetable oscillators
  • If the sample editor window is visible, oscillator modifications will be displayed as they are performed

As with ReSynth1, this tool does not have access to the instrument parameters. Thus, once a desired sound has been created, further sound design can be achieved (and is recommended) with the volume, pitch, panning and filter envelopes and LFOs available in the 'Instrument Settings'.

Note that ReSynth2 is not backwards compatible with ReSynth1 due to vastly different architectural changes.

Finally, if you 'undo' a change within Renoise, please close the ReSynth2 dialog and reopen to resynchronize changes.

Version 2.2 update bug fix changes:

  • Fixed the default volume on new instrument / reset bug
  • New default volumes are oscillator 1 at -3dB, while oscillators 2, 3 and 4 are volume = off
  • Fixed the waveforms list refresh with only one folder of waveforms
  • Automatic wavetable oscillator selection on waveform loading
  • Automatic waveform looping for small samples (<256 sample frames)

Wonderful!

Superb!

The gauntlet has been well and truly thrown down now.

Bring on the synths.

funky awesome! thank u very

funky awesome! thank u very much!

well done.

well done.

Realy nice tool with, great

Realy nice tool with, great with renoise draw pensil :)

Feature suggestion...

Very nice tool. Thank you.

If I may, I'd like to make some suggestions. A global randomize button for all current and future parameters would be great.
